Games that people play

Some news from the WoW direction - an interesting insight on how people's minds seem to sometimes work, and more reasons behind me not liking people all that much. Copied from a conversation with Inny, so bear with the format, please.

Angthoron:
What sporum now?
Inari:
ER
Inari:
My view on Dragonfury has gone even lower
Angthoron:
What now?
Inari:
He met some chick in WoW, got her pregnant and left them a week after the baby was born
Angthoron:
Just ICly, I hope? <.<
Inari: Nuhuh
Angthoron: Whaaaaaaa?
Inari: Remember Larnia?
Inari: They had a baby
Inari: A real baby
Angthoron: As in, "Waaa, waaa" baby that you get kicking around the mother's stomach for around 9 months, the non-internet baby kind?
Inari: A real, screaming, kicking, pinksinned, pooping baby
Angthoron: And they made it despite the fact that idiots shouldn't procreate and DF was an obvious asshole? Wow.
Inari: Well, it seems people who shouldn't have babies, get them the most Angthoron: Though that seriously is pretty fucked up regardless of the abovementioned
Angthoron: But to be honest, somehow I wasn't really expecting a lot more from DF
Inari: There was one other case on ER a year or so ago, someone had a baby and GAVE IT UP TO SOCIAL SERVICES SO SHE COULD PLAY WOW
Angthoron: ........................................................................
Angthoron: Kidding, right?
Inari: No, the baby was taken away from her because she didn't look after it but spent time on WoW

Mkay. I'll skip the general part about "poor child" and "poor mother" and so forth. It's all been done before, and while I feel extremely sad for the kids on the account of the shabby parents and a whole bunch of things, like being given out for adoption over a freaking game... But I'd much rather address the parents in this case. Or rather, the fact that this world needs to develop child-making into a licensed practice. Fail the parenthood test? Oops, no baby for you. Why are we getting them driver's licenses for pretty much everything there is that moves with assistance of an engine, pass exams in school and get tested for professional appropriateness when we apply somewhere (hell, 3 years' experience is a must in any decent place nowadays, so maybe 3 years' experience of parenting should be required!) while morons are free to make babies left and right without a single thought in their head? Really, why? And then they claim our society cares for children - well, obviously, as seen from all the recent things going on (13 euro refund to social service for child benefits that a child that just died wasn't any longer eligible for; violent child-abuser mother given custody to her children but fails it by killing them all, brainless, irresponsible, underage people allowed to reproduce freely), it doesn't give a flying... duck.

Comments? Am I being totalitarian again? Repressing people's base freedoms? Being anti-religion?

Oh, and CC, if you read this, post the link to the other WoW thing you just sent me yesterday? Lost the thing in a crash, and illustrates some things quite well, too.

  1. You know my view on the subject based on some things we've talked about in the past. All I can say that these things really make me angry, and upset on levels you can't imagine.

I've seen my friends struggle in having a baby. Sound minded couples with good, steady income and a home ready for a child but the child doesn't arrive. A lot of love goes wasted in that process. And then people who really shouldn't procreate seem to breed like rats. Unfair much? Hell yeah.

  2. Oh, and I have to add one thing after reading the replies in that one particular thread.

While these mothers need support and guidance, they don't need understanding and patting on the head. They need a real life wake up call. A loud one, too.

Kids go first, kk? Nothing more to it.

    *goes off fuming*

  3. It's not about the game. It's about people being stupid. Same goes for the thread you wanted me to post a link to. Here it is, but I don't think it's relevant:

    http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=965646786

The thread is written by a husband whose wife had cyber-sex with fellow WoW players using Ventrilo. I don't know why she did it or the status of their marriage, but she could have slept with the guy next door just as easily, or flirt, have phone-sex, etc. Again, it's not about the game.

And yeah, it makes me very angry too. If I ever meet DF or his girlfriend I don't think they'd be pleased.

I don't think parent licensing or training would solve everything, and most people are responsible enough to have safe sex and care for a child if they do decide to have one.

In any case you'll be dealing with unwanted pregnancies, unless you go Half-Life 2 on people.

  4. "most people are responsible enough to have safe sex and care for a child if they do decide to have one" - you'd be surprised...

And as I said at the top of the post, it's not about the game, it's about idiocy indeed. But funnily enough, another realization sort of hit me a while ago. So many countries extend the age of youth to late twenties *at least*. While it's on one hand a great thought, on the other, have you given a thought as to why it's done? Just to make citizens feel happy? Governments don't do that... Governments are there to govern and get most use out of people possible.

So... Younger people tend to be a better marketing target. So, make a larger youth scope, you make a larger field for selling crap. But again, the side effects of THAT are quite good regardlessly.

    /derail mode off.

In any case, most people are supposed to be responsible enough to drive a car without speeding too much, or driving over pedestrians, but there's them driving courses with lots of theory anyway. It's there for a reason, and for the same reason I believe there should be some sort of tests for eligibility to make a parent.

Since, like, having a gay couple bring up a child is a no-no, but to have a childbeater or a braindead drunk or what-the-hell-ever is just fine.

  5. As for that thread... It's not so much that the wife did the Vent thing, or the husband that's so pissed he's made it all totally public... No, that's not the point. That's their private life, they can do whatever with it.

What freaks me out is the comments.

    "Omg legendary thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  6. It's the WoW forum, what did you expect?

Judging from Demeter's replies, he didn't expect much either. He was just there to talk to the people he needed to talk to, and since he didn't know who they were, he had no choice but to go public.

I read more of Demeter's posts from later after the initial post, including ones he posted after his wife had come back from her absence. It looks like the original post doesn't tell the whole story.

In any case, I'm disgusted by people who create "Gilgamesh Encyclopedias" and otherwise derive entertainment from someone's loss and sorrow. They should be severely beat up and put into place. I wonder why the Blizzard mods haven't interfered yet...

  7. Mmm, that's what I mean. Pretty sickening - whether the whole thing is a hoax or not is a totally different issue, but how the people respond to it is sick. Not to mention that some idiot thought it would be funny to make a fake "profile" on Myspace (whatever the hell that is, I keep hearing about it and now even looked at it and see nothing other than a dating service with blogging capabilities. Enlighten me?) that's found here - http://www.myspace.com/onygilga

Why do I say it's fake?

    1) Generic info one could either find out by going to the guild's site and looking at a profile

    2) Generic picture that can be fake or, again, fished from the forums

    3) Absolute void in the regards of usage of the account. No blog posts, no commentaries in the accounts of the "friends".

    4) All of the "friends" logged on last between 11th and 13th, making it very likely that they have just logged in to add her as they came across and read the "legendary thread"

    5) Account name. If I was making an account anywhere, I'd definitely not use a lame one like that. AngthER? I don't think so. Though... AngER sounds good. In any case, onygilga, derived from server name and five starting main WoW char letters don't make it past my BS filter.

So, what we see is utterly pathetic crap from people that think they are smart. In the real world, THIS would actually amount to prison sentence - identity fraud and slander. In the internet, it still floats by... However, my homeland, once again, being the freak country it is, has actually sent a LJ blogger to court for radical statements.

And to be honest, I think it's a good move. If you comment others in a very public space, you carry a responsibility for your words and actions. Might seem brutish and anti-libertarian, but for a similar statement in any other mass media a person would go to court without a second thought from anyone.
